The fourth Lake Alta expedition, 2008
Well we did it again, and in the best weather ever. The ice on the lake at 1,800m (6,000 feet) up the Remarkables was a metre thick this year, and 37 scuba divers went under it, and then back to the Kiwitub. Don't stand between the tub and the hole in the ice when the divers get out of the 0˚C water.
After they'd left, Nina and Lara arrived to tent out after a hot tub and bottle of sweet Lexia Riesling under a perfect clear and calm night. They headed off the next morning across to Wye Creek, gun cross country skiers that they are.
The N.Z. Alpine Club Otago section snowcraft course then descended from on high, tubbed, shared the second bottle of Lexia, rolled in the snow, and obligingly rolled and carried the tub and gear back to the pick-up for the snow groomer. A good weekend.
